Damilola Ogunbiyi: Championing Sustainable Energy at the Africa Energy Technology Conference 2025

Damilola Ogunbiyi, a leading global voice in sustainable energy, is set to attend the Africa
Energy Technology Conference 2025, scheduled to take place from May 27 to 29 at the
Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. As the CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary
General for Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and Co-Chair of UN-Energy, her
presence highlights the critical importance of the event’s theme: “Innovate, Invest,
Implement: Revolutionised Financing for Sustainable Energy Sector Growth.”

Ogunbiyi is renowned for her trailblazing work in the energy space, especially across Africa.
She previously made history as the first female Managing Director of Nigeria’s Rural
Electrification Agency, where she led the Nigerian Electrification Project—a $550 million
initiative developed in partnership with the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
This landmark project has to date provided energy access to over 8 million people across
Nigeria, significantly improving quality of life and economic prospects for underserved
communities.
Before that, as the General Manager of the Lagos State Electricity Board, Ogunbiyi oversaw
the development and delivery of over 100 megawatts of decentralized energy solutions,
providing reliable power to hospitals, schools, and government institutions across Lagos
State.

Her current role at SEforALL has seen her drive major global initiatives aimed at achieving
universal energy access and accelerating the transition to clean energy. Under her leadership,
the organization has partnered with over 200 institutions, supported more than 90 countries,
and helped mobilize over $1.4 trillion in energy finance commitments. Through innovative
programs like the Universal Energy Facility, Powering Healthcare, Women and Youth at the
Forefront, and Clean Cooking, Ogunbiyi continues to champion solutions that address both
energy poverty and climate change.

Currently, Ogunbiyi is working on an ambitious initiative alongside the World Bank, the
African Development Bank Group, and other development partners to electrify 300 million
Africans by 2030. This initiative dubbed Mission 300 represents a bold and targeted approach
to tackling the continent’s energy access deficit at scale. It focuses on driving transformative
investments, policy reforms, and partnerships that can rapidly accelerate electrification efforts
across Africa. This initiative aligns closely with the theme of the Africa Energy Technology
Conference—emphasizing innovation, investment, and impactful implementation.

The Africa Energy Technology Conference 2025 comes at a critical time as African nations
strive to balance development goals with the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions.
With the theme focused on revolutionizing financing in the sector, Ogunbiyi’s participation is
expected to be instrumental. Her experience in mobilizing resources and forging strategic
partnerships will bring valuable insights into how Africa can attract investment, scale
technology, and implement inclusive energy policies.

Beyond her executive leadership, Ogunbiyi serves on various global advisory boards and
councils, where she continues to advocate for climate-resilient development and inclusive
energy access. Her voice carries weight not just as a policy leader, but as someone who has
successfully translated vision into real-world impact on the ground.

Her presence at the Africa Energy Technology Conference is not only symbolic but strategic,
signalling a renewed commitment to actionable change in the continent’s energy landscape.
As African leaders, innovators, and investors gather to discuss the future of energy, Damilola
Ogunbiyi’s contributions are expected to galvanize bold thinking and decisive action toward a
more sustainable and equitable energy future for all.
