ACCRA, GHANA — In a milestone engagement for Euro-African energy cooperation, a high-level delegation from the Africa Energy Technology Centre (AETC), led by Founder and President Emelia Akumah, paid a courtesy visit to the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Laura Ranalli, at the Italian Embassy in Accra.
The visit served as a strategic alignment between AETC’s mandate to drive energy technology sovereignty and Italy’s burgeoning “Mattei Plan” (Piano Mattei) a multi-billion dollar investment framework designed to foster a new era of equal partnership between Italy and African nations.
Strategic Alignment: AETC and the Mattei Plan
Central to the discussions was the synergy between AETC’s goal of establishing Africa’s first “Smart Energy Technology Hub” and Italy’s strategic focus on energy security and industrial development in Africa. H.E. Laura Ranalli emphasized Italy’s commitment to moving beyond traditional aid toward investment-led cooperation, a vision that mirrors AETC’s mission to reposition Africa as a creator, rather than just a consumer, of energy technology.
“Italy is a global powerhouse in industrial engineering and renewable energy innovation,” noted Emelia Akumah. “By aligning AETC’s local expertise with the framework of the Mattei Plan, we are creating a bridge for Italian technology and capital to support authentic African industrialization.”
Key Areas of Collaboration & Funding
The meeting explored several actionable pillars for collaboration, with a specific focus on funding mechanisms to scale African energy projects:
- Energy Infrastructure Funding: Leveraging the Italian Climate Fund and the Rome Process/Mattei Plan Financing Facility which recently committed significant concessional loans and grants through the African Development Bank to de-risk energy technology projects in Ghana and the wider sub-region.
- Technology & Skills Transfer: Integrating Italian technical excellence into AETC’s Youth Program to train the next generation of African energy engineers.
- Green Hydrogen and Renewables: Exploring joint ventures in decarbonization technology, where Italian firms like Eni and Snam can partner with local innovators.
The Road to AETC 2026
A major highlight of the visit was the preparation for the Africa Energy Technology Conference (AETC 2026). The delegation invited the Italian Embassy and Italian energy giants to take a leading role in the 2026 summit under the theme: “From Borders to Bridges: Driving Intra-African Trade and Development through Energy & Technology Services.”
Ambassador Ranalli expressed keen interest in using AETC 2026 as a platform to showcase Italian-African energy success stories and to facilitate matchmaking between Italian investors and African project developers.
Conclusion: A New Era of Energy Diplomacy
This courtesy visit reinforces the growing importance of “Energy Diplomacy” in the Ghana-Italy relationship. As AETC and the Italian Embassy move forward, the focus remains on tangible outcomes ensuring that strategic funding and advanced technology translate into sustainable power, jobs, and industrial growth for the African continent.
