The Opportunity
Ghana has abundant sunshine, millions of rooftops and a legal foundation for net metering already in place. What has been missing is the national framework that pays citizens for the power they generate and builds a licensed industry around it. GNSPI is designed to supply exactly that, scaling an existing pilot into a national movement.
How the Prosumer Model Works
A household or a business installs a grid-connected solar system.
A smart bidirectional meter records both what they use and what they generate.
Surplus power is exported to the grid and credited at a guaranteed feed-in tariff.
Credits offset the electricity bill, or are paid out, over a long, guaranteed period.
Why It Is Credible
GNSPI does not start from zero. Ghana's Renewable Energy Act, a published net metering code, a digital application portal and a donor-funded pilot already exist. What is needed now is the national framework and the signal that take it to scale.
Where It Stands
The initiative has been presented to the Presidency. Tariffs, eligibility, financing and the registry are matters for the institutions that would run them; this page is updated as those arrangements develop.
