Biography
Peter Stuttaford is the founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer of Pathwaze Energy B.V., an engineering and consulting company based in Arnhem, the Netherlands, which he set up in early 2026. Pathwaze advises on combustion and emissions control, gas turbine design, development and testing, fuel flexibility (including the use of waste gas, flare gas and hydrogen), operational flexibility for quick grid response and the integration of hybrid energy systems. It is also developing modular hydrogen production based on thermochemical cycles rather than electrolysis. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Africa Energy Technology Centre (AETC).
Stuttaford has more than 30 years of experience in power generation technology. After his studies he spent five years as a gas turbine combustion engineer at Pratt & Whitney Canada, then 17 years at PSM (Power Systems Manufacturing) in Florida, United States, where he ultimately led the Product Engineering organisation. He was then appointed Chief Executive Officer of Thomassen Energy, the Netherlands-based gas turbine service business of PSM, a Hanwha company, and led it for seven and a half years, from 2018 through 2025. Thomassen focuses on clean and affordable energy through the upgrade and retrofit of existing gas turbine assets.
He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from Cranfield University in England, a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in South Africa. He is named as an inventor on 62 patents. In June 2025 he received the ASME IGTI Industrial Gas Turbine Technology Award, which recognises sustained personal contributions to industrial gas turbine technology, and he served on the Executive Committee of the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute from 2022 to 2025. He has been a board member of ETN Global, the international gas turbine technology association, since April 2024.
His work centres on gas turbine combustion and the place of turbines in changing power systems: low NOx emissions at ever higher firing temperatures and with diverse fuels, the adoption of hydrogen and ammonia to cut carbon emissions, the use of waste gas instead of flaring, and flexible operation to balance renewable generation on the grid. These were the themes of his 2025 ASME award lecture. In 2026 he began advising Finno Exergy, a Finnish developer of pressure gain combustion technology for gas turbines, on markets and partnerships, and he co-chaired a users’ panel for ETN Global at the Asia Turbomachinery and Pump Symposium in Kuala Lumpur.
